The Red Sox have placed third baseman Pablo Sandoval on the disabled list with a strained left shoulder, the team announced Wednesday.
Utility infielder Josh Rutledge was called up from Triple A to take Sandoval’s spot on the roster.
Sandoval was relegated to a bench role this season after reporting to camp overweight and struggling in spring training games. Travis Shaw has taken Sandoval’s spot at third and has six hits, including three doubles, in his first 20 at bats.
