Javier Baez’s solo shot in the bottom of the 13th inning on Sunday gave the Cubs a 4–3 win and a four-game sweep of the Nationals.
With one man out in the inning, Baez took a 2–2 slider from reliever Blake Treinen at 86 mph deep to center, over the head of Michael Taylor, and circled the bases with a game-winning homer. Chicago improved its league-best record to 24–6 with the win, and increased its lead in the NL Central to 7 1/2 games over the Pirates.
Baez entered the game in the eighth for relief pitcher Trevor Cahill, and finished 1 for 3 on the afternoon.
Travis Wood picked up the win, holding Washington scoreless in the top of the frame. It was Chicago’s seventh straight win.
