The Houston Astros will promote first base prospect A.J. Reed from Triple A, the team announced on Friday.
Reed, 23, is Houston’s top prospect according to Baseball America. A second-round pick out of Kentucky in 2014, he has hit .266 with 11 home runs and 36 RBIs in 222 at bats so far this year for Triple A Fresno.
Houston has been using utility infielder Marwin Gonzalez, who owns a .259 batting average, regularly at first base. This move will allow the team to use Gonzalez in different spots, and sit him in favor of stronger offensive players.
