The Diamondbacks have demoted righthander Shelby Miller to Triple A Reno, the team announced Thursday.

Miller, 25, holds a bloated 7.14 ERA this season in 14 starts, with a 2–9 record. His performance is a stark contrast from 2015, when he posted a 3.02 ERA with the Braves and made the All-Star team, although he posted a record of 6–17 in 33 starts due in part to a lack of run support.

Arizona acquired him in an off-season trade that sent 2015 No. 1 overall pick Dansby Swanson, 2014 first-rounder Aaron Blair and promising outfielder Ender Inciarte to Atlanta in exchange.

Miller missed time with a finger injury this season, but continued to struggle after recovering. “I’m surprised I stayed up here this long,” he admitted.

“You never want that to happen, but my goal is to go down there, figure some things out and get back here as quick as possible,” Miller added.

The Diamondbacks are a disappointing 38–52 and have fallen out of the playoff race after a splashy off-season that saw them sign free agent ace Zack Greinke.
