David Ortiz helped off field after fouling ball off leg
David Ortiz had to be helped to the dugout after fouling a ball off his leg.
Red Sox designated hitter David Ortiz was removed from Wednesday’s game against the Yankees after fouling a ball off his leg in the ninth inning.
Ortiz swung at a 2–2 inside fastball from closer Dellin Betances, and drove it right into his front leg. He immediately came up limping, let out a loud yell, and had to be helped off the field by the team’s trainer and manager John Farrell.
After the game, he went for X-rays on his right shin, which came back negative.
Ortiz was playing in his 103rd game of the season, and has never played fewer than 109 since 2002.
Pitcher Steven Wright was scratched from his start on Thursday due to a shoulder injury, and Mookie Betts also left the game with right calf tightness.
