Red Sox’ Hanley Ramirez exits game after collision at first base

Hamley Ramirez was involved in a nasty collision at first base and had to leave Thursday’s Yankees–Red Sox game.

Red Sox first baseman Hanley Ramirez left Thursday’s game against the Yankees after injuring himself at a collision at first.

In the top of the eighth, Yankees catcher Gary Sanchez was attempting to beat out a groundball when Ramirez leaned backward on top of the first base bag in an effort to field a low throw. Sanchez ran into Ramirez, knocking him to the ground, and Ramirez immediately grabbed his back, writhing in pain.

He would remain in the game to finish the inning in the field, but Travis Shaw hit for him in the bottom half of the frame.

The Ramirez injury adds to a growing list of ailments for Boston. Outfielder Mookie Betts is currently day-to-day with calf tightness, David Ortiz is not 100% after fouling a ball off his shin on Wednesday, and Steven Wright was scratched from his scheduled start on Thursday after injuring himself pinch-running.

Ramirez, 32, is hitting .268 with 14 home runs and 62 RBIs this season in 385 at bats.
