Red Sox have reached out to Jonathan Papelbon
The Red Sox have reached out to former closer Jonathan Papelbon, manager John Farrell told reporters before Tuesday’s game against the Orioles.
The comments came after the skipper told MLB Network Radio that Papelbon “could be an addition” in Boston.
The 35-year-old righthander spent his first seven seasons with the Red Sox before leaving to sign with the Phillies in 2011. He was named to four straight All-Star teams from 2006–09, and posted a 2.33 ERA with 368 saves.
He was recently granted his release from the Nationals, where he went 2–4 with a 4.37 ERA this season in 37 appearances. He allowed eight earned runs in his final eight outings.
Red Sox designated hitter David Ortiz said to ESPN Wednesday that the team was open to Papelbon’s return.
"I don't know what happened there at the Nationals, but he was a great guy and we would welcome him back with open arms," Ortiz told ESPN Deportes. "And we need help in the bullpen. We definitely do."
