Guardians Manager Terry Francona Hospitalized After Missing Tuesday’s Game

The team learned just minutes before first pitch that Francona was not feeling well and would have to undergo testing.

Shortly before the start of Tuesday’s game against the Royals, Guardians manager Terry Francona was reportedly not feeling well, resulting in him leaving the team to undergo testing at a local hospital. The decision to get further testing was made “out of an abundance of caution” given Francona’s medical history, per Ryan Lewis of the Akron Beacon Journal.

Francona will be held overnight for observation, according to MLB.com’s Mandy Bell. Acting manager DeMarlo Hale didn’t find out Francona would miss the game until 15 minutes before first pitch.

Francona has dealt with health issues in recent years that have cut previous seasons short. He left the team midway through the 2021 campaign to undergo multiple surgeries to his hip and toe. He also missed much of the ’20 season due to gastrointestinal issues and blood clots.

Francona, 64, is in his 11th year with Cleveland after 12 combined seasons with the Red Sox and Phillies. The Guardians won the game, 2–1, to improve to 38–40 on the year.
