Luis Severino has struggled through his first 12 starts of the 2023 MLB season. After another disappointing showing on the mound during Sunday’s clash against the Orioles, the Yankees’ starting pitcher was brutally honest with his self-assessment.

Severino pitched just 3 1/3 innings in the AL East rivalry game, though fans were wondering why manager Aaron Boone left him on the mound even that long.

The 29-year-old surrendered nine earned runs on 10 hits, including letting up six runs before recording a single out in the first inning. Severino struck out five, walked two, and allowed one home run in the game.

It was the fourth time this season Severino has surrendered seven or more runs, and he didn’t hide from the fact that he needs to be better going forward.

“Right now I feel like the worst pitcher in the league, no doubt about it,” said Severino, via Erik Boland of Newsday.

Sunday’s loss saw Severino’s ERA balloon to 7.49 on the season, as he’s surrendered 48 earned runs across 57.2 innings on the mound. His ERA in the month of July is an unsightly 11.22, the worst mark from a New York pitcher in a calendar month since A.J. Burnett in 2010 and 2011, according to Katie Sharp

The Yankees (55–50) are now nine games behind the Orioles (64-41) in the division, and New York remains 3 1/2 games out of a wild card spot in the American League playoff race.
