The Padres are hiring veteran coach Mike Shildt as their new manager, ESPN’s Jeff Passan reports.

This will be Shildt’s second stint as a manger in the majors, having already managed the Cardinals between 2018 and ’21. In that span, Shildt led St. Louis to 90-win seasons in two full seasons, and had winning records both after taking over midseason in 2018 and in the shortened ’20 season.

Overall, the veteran went 252-199 with the Cardinals, including an NLCS appearance in 2019, but the organization moved on from him following a Wild Card berth in ’21. He joined the Padres last year as an assistant coach.

San Diego will hire Shildt to replace Bob Melvin, who left the team after two seasons to take the same job with the Giants. Shildt will be the Padres’ seventh manager since the team fired Bud Black midway through the 2015 season.

Last year, San Diego disappointed with an 82-80 record despite making it to the NLCS a season prior.
