The Los Angeles Angels were blown out of their first two games in Baltimore by a combined 17 runs which led to manager Ron Washington calling for a team meeting before things spiraled out of control.

“We know what type of team we are,” Detmers told reporters after the game. “To have a meeting after the second game, it was just to calm us down a little bit. It wasn’t like getting chewed out. More about, 'Go out there and have fun.' So there was zero pressure.”

The Angels bounced back with a 4-1 win over the Orioles at Camden Yards on Sunday afternoon and Detmers delivered with five nearly flawless innings. The lone run he gave up came in the second when he briefly lost his command with two walks and a hit-by-pitch.

Detmers finished his season debut allowing one earned run on two hits, walked three, and struck out seven. He got through his five innings on 88 pitches.

“That's a very good club that he shut down,” Washington said. “And in the first few innings, he got ahead of them and then he started mixing things up. We needed that pitching job very, very badly. And he gave it to us.”

Reliever José Soriano set up with three scoreless innings and closer Carlos Estévez picked up his first save of the year.

“It was great,” Estévez said. “We started off on the wrong foot, but it’s like what Wash basically said yesterday, ‘We're gonna get beat up, but it's not how we get beat up. It’s how we get up and keep fighting.' And that's what we showed today.”

The Angels remain on the road starting a three-game series in Miami on Monday. Chase Silseth starts for the Angels against the Marlins’ Max Meyer.
