Angels Reportedly Never Offered Blake Snell Contract, Despite His Desire to Join Team
All offseason, all fans heard was that the Los Angeles Angels were serious players for former free agent starting pitcher Blake Snell. Snell was the best starter on the market for a long time but waited until the middle of March to sign a contract.
Coming off a Cy Young winning season, Snell was determined to sign a deal that he deemed fair. He ended up settling on a two-year, $62 million contract with the San Francisco Giants, which does have an opt-out after year one.
Many believed the Angels would land Snell due to their need in the starting rotation, but they never got too far in talks with him. According to USA Today's Bob Nightengale, the Angels never offered Snell a contract, despite his desire to sign with the team.
"Snell, who signed a two-year, $62 million contract with the Giants just before the end of camp, was actually hoping to sign with the Angels, but an offer never came through."
This is a not a great look for the Angels, considering the price that Snell ended up signing for. The Halos missed a prime opportunity to add one of the better pitchers in the game today, reportedly because Arte Moreno didn't want to sign off on a contract.
The Angels may regret not signing a player like Snell if their season goes down the drain like it has in previous years. The fanbase has been starved for a consistent winner for a long time and missing out on another star player won't help.
