Angels GM Perry Minasian Reveals Thought Process Behind Latest Signing
The Los Angeles Angels acquired southpaw reliever Amir Garrett on Friday to give them some depth in the bullpen. While they only signed him to a minor league deal, Angels manager Perry Minasian feels confident about this newest pitcher.
Minasian told Jeff Flecther of the OC Register why he feels the signing of Garrett could work.
"General manager Perry Minasian said they felt Garrett's résumé warranted giving him a shot. "The stuff is still there," Minasian said. "The command is spotty. We'll give him a chance to go to Salt Lake and see what he does."…
In 2023, his pitch mix included a slider, sinker, and four-seam fastball that traveled around 95 mph. Last season with the Kansa City Royals, Garrett recorded a 3.33 ERA. In 27 games, he pitched in 24.1 innings, recorded 28 strikeouts and a 1.73 WHIP. He's pitched in 322 games in his career and has a 13-19 record with a 4.95 ERA, 376 strikeouts, and a 1.44 WHIP in 325.1 innings.
The Victorville native signed a minor league contract with the San Francisco Giants in early February. However, after discovering he would not make the Opening Day roster, they released the 31-year-old.
Minasian and the Angels brass will see how he performs in Triple-A at Salt Lake City. If he performs well, maybe we could see him in the red and white in Anaheim.
