Angels Eyeing Top Free Agent Slugger This Offseason
The Los Angeles Angels are searching for help all over the roster, including to their offensive attack. They want to become a more consistent hitting team, and the front office is looking all around the league to potentially add.
The New York Post's Jon Heyman is reporting that the Angels are eying one of the top bats left on the open market. The Halos have a need in their designated hitter spot, and slugger J.D. Martinez could make sense to fill it.
"The Mets and Angels are eying top free-agent DH J.D. Martinez."
Per Jon Heyman of The New York Post
With the loss of Shohei Ohtani, the Angels have a large amount of production to replace. Martinez may not be Ohtani, but he is the next-best hitter available in free agency.
He had himself a great season with the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2023, hitting .271 with 33 home runs and 103 runs batted in. Martinez would provide a dynamic bat in the middle of the lineup and would bring veteran experience to the table.
Alongside Mike Trout and Anthony Rendon, the Angels could have a solid offense if the players could stay healthy. Of course, health is always a factor, and the Angels haven't been able to make it happen in recent years.
But Martinez thrived playing in a stacked lineup with the Dodgers, and it could be somewhat similar with the Halos. They also have some young talent on the team that could provide some pop, and he could help mentor the young guys.
The Angels aren't seen as a true contender just yet, so that could hinder Martinez's interest, but money tends to talk. The Halos have been willing to spend money to bring in big hitters, and maybe Martinez is the next in line.
