As the Los Angeles Angels enter fully into their offseason, the team wants to make some changes in how they operate. After another disappointing season, the Halos are looking to get themselves back into contention next year.

General Manager Perry Minasian wants the Angels to get back to the basics next season. He spoke about it on MLB Network, prior to the news about new manager Ron Washington being hired airing.

“This is a team. We have to be deep. We have to win games in different ways. If there’s a day out there where we need to pitch and play defense and it’s a low scoring game, we need to figure out how to do that. Move a runner. Score a man on third with less than 2 outs. Play situational baseball. When there’s a day when we need to do well and score some runs, we need to do that too.”

With the hire of Washington, the Angels should work on the basics of the game. He is an old-school style of manager, and he understands what it takes to win baseball games.

He will help this team build good habits moving forward, and it should result in more success on the field. The biggest issue will be the talent that he is working with, as the Angels don’t have a ton of great options to work with, especially if two-way superstar Shohei Ohtani leaves the team this winter.

But Washington is a professional through and through, and he will find a way to make things work. He was hired by the team, because they believe in him to help right the ship, and get them out of this long playoff drought.

They may not reach the postseason next season, but if the Halos can look competitive, it could start a chain of events for this organization. They have been stuck in the mud so to speak for far too long, and it’s about time that they take that step to being competitive.
