Angels Injury News: The Latest Updates on Trout, Ohtani, Rendon, Neto, O'Hoppe, Moore and More
The Angels caught a bad case of the injury bug in the final few weeks before the All-Star break. Mike Trout fractured a bone in his wrist, Shohei Ohtani dealt with a nagging cracked fingernail and Anthony Rendon fouled a ball off his shin and missed time — among other injuries.
Here's how the injured Angels are shaping up as the All-Star break reaches its close.
Mike Trout
Trout fractured the hamate bone in his left wrist after fouling off a pitch against the San Diego Padres Jul. 3. After undergoing surgery the following Wednesday, manager Phil Nevin said he expected Trout to miss between four and eight weeks.
Trout is now donning a cast from his hand up to his elbow, and hopes to return to the field before September, indicating that his recovery process will likely take longer than the minimum four weeks.
Shohei Ohtani
Probably the most talked about player in Major League Baseball — and for good reason — Ohtani has proven to be durable in addition to being perhaps the best athlete to put on a baseball glove.
Luckily for Angels fans hoping to see more of Ohtani's greatness after the break, Ohtani provided a positive update on his cracked middle fingernail. During the MLB All-Star Game, in which Ohtani participated as a designated hitter, the 29-year-old said that, other than a few hiccups with his finger, he was healthy.
Nevin announced that Ohtani would start the first game after the All-Star break, meaning the superstar will take the mound Friday against the Houston Astros.
Anthony Rendon
Rendon was placed on the 10-day injured list after fouling a ball off of his shin against the Padres. It was ruled a left shin contusion and the X-rays were negative. If it is merely a bruise, there is a decent chance Rendon, who has suffered other injuries this season, will be back in the lineup Friday.
Zach Neto
The Angels shortstop was placed on the injured list June 15 because of a left oblique strain but has reportedly responded well to an increase in baseball activities according to Rotowire. If he continues to progress in a positive direction, Neto could be back for the Houston series.
Logan O'Hoppe
The 23-year-old catcher had surgery in April to repair a torn labrum on his left shoulder, and took 25 dry swings on Jul. 4, according to The Orange County Register's Jeff Fletcher. In the same report, O'Hoppe said that the exercise felt "really good." O'Hoppe's earliest possible return would be in late August.
Matt Moore
One of the Angels' top relievers suffered a Grade 2 oblique strain during a side session before a game in late May. The 34-year-old threw a bullpen session Jul. 4 and is expected to be ready to return after the All-Star break according to MLB.com's Rhett Bollinger.
Ben Joyce
Joyce, whose brother Zach was just drafted by the Angels, left a Jun. 9 game against the Mariners with what was determined to be right ulnar neuritis but escaped facing any ligament damage to his right elbow. Joyce is rehabbing in Arizona but is not expected to pitch off of a mound for at least another 2 weeks, according to Sam Blum of The Athletic.
Brandon Drury
Drury received positive news last week when an MRI on his shoulder came returned clean, according to Fletcher. He received a cortisone shot and will be re-evaluated after the break. It is likely that Drury will return before the end of July.
