The Los Angeles Angels hiring of veteran manager Ron Washington has been met with much praise since the news was announced. Washington will help bring stability to the table, and he has a certain energy that isn’t matched by others in the game.

He wants to hit the ground running with his new organization, and that means getting everyone on the same page. Nobody knows what will happen with Shohei Ohtani, but the Angels still have two other star players on the roster.

Washington said that he wants to start getting in touch with Mike Trout and Anthony Rendon this offseason. He envisions big things from both players and wants them to step up as leaders going forward.

“Those are the two huge leaders here,” Washington said. “And I do want them to lead. They won’t be able to lead by themselves but I want them to take the lead because all the younger players we’ve got around here look up to those guys. I want them to lead.”

If both Trout and Rendon are able to stay healthy this season, the Angels could be in great shape. They are the two best players on the roster and need to lead by example.

Having a guy like Washington around could fire them up, and motivation could play a big role for this team. Nobody expects the Angels to do much next season, but Washington is ready to surprise people.

“Once we get things together and we get these guys together in spring training and start to work, our whole focus is going to be to run the West down,” said Washington, who replaces Phil Nevin, who wasn’t re-signed after the Angels completed their eighth consecutive losing year and their ninth straight non-playoff season. “And you can take that to the bank and deposit it.”

It remains to be seen who Washington will have on the roster to work with next year, but he will make do with whomever it is. He is up for the challenge, and if his first press conference was anything to take hold of, the Angels hired the right person.
