Angels News: Another Former Arte Moreno Hire Out of Baseball Job, Under Investigation
On the East Coast, one team is making headlines after firing its general manager just days after the 2023 season ended.
The New York Mets are on the search for a new general manager as Billy Eppler was let go from his duties after being with the team for two seasons.
Eppler's firing comes with some controversy as he is now under investigation by the MLB for improper use of the injured list.
The MLB is finding there were multiple occasions that Eppler placed Mets players on the IL with phantom injuries.
He would put players on the injured list who were not hurt as a way to get better players onto the team.
His resignation with the Mets is a direct result of the MLB cracking down on his practices.
Eppler was hired by Angels owner Arte Moreno in 2015. In his five years with the Angels, he was responsible for signing Mike Trout to an extension and Shohei Ohtani when he came over from Japan.
Under Eppler's supervision, the Angels developed an analytic department as well.
Although he was good at getting players to sign with the team such as Andrelton Simmons and Anthony Rendon, Eppler was never able to get the Halos to the postseason.
Now after having one of the most disappointing seasons in Mets history and being under investigation, who knows what Eppler's future in baseball looks like.
