The biggest elephant in the room when it comes to the Angels 2023 season is that many believe Shohei Ohtani will be rocking a different uniform in just a couple of months. The fear is very real considering that he is only getting older at this point and has yet to even sniff the playoffs yet.

It is pretty wild to think that he won a world championship in one tournament with Japan before even landing a playoff birth with superstar teammate Mike Trout. When you consider that teams like the Los Angeles Dodgers, New York Mets, and other big franchises all have assets to hand out, Ohtani will have a lot of bidders.

However, we have to listen team owner Arte Moreno no matter how unreliable he's been in the past. Moreno has been firm on the fact that the clubhouse will not take any phone calls on their superstar pitcher if the postseason is still within reach once the deadline comes up.

And The Athletic's Jim Bowden wants all Angels fans to remember this and also pay close attention to the standings. He believes that if Ohtani does indeed join a new clubhouse, it will not be until free agency.

"I also think the AL West will be up for grabs, without any team running away with the division (although I still think the Astros will end up on top). And I think the AL West will have legit wild-card contenders. I find it hard to believe the Angels won’t at least be within striking distance on Aug. 1, so I say he’ll finish the regular season alongside

Mike Trout

and company."

If the Angels give it everything they've got and make the postseason for the first time since 2014, they will have taken care of their job. The biggest knocks on LA during this Ohtani era have been their failures to surround him with good talent and extend their season.

Well, they took care of that first one this past offseason by bringing in the likes of Hunter Renfroe, Gio Urshela, and also finally having a healthy Anthony Rendon. Now they just have to finish the second one too.
