Tragedy struck the Hawaiian island of Maui beginning Aug. 8 when strong winds and dry conditions allowed wildfires to spread rapidly and overtake several parts of the island.

The death toll is currently at 111, according to Hawaiian Gov. Josh Green, and at least 1,000 people are unaccounted for since the fires swept the island. The Maui Medical Center is "very full" because of the high number of burn victims, according to Hilton Raethal, CEO of the Healthcare Association of Hawaii.

It is currently unsafe to drink water in the most hard-hit parts of Maui, Lahaina and the Upper Kula area.

The tragic news was widely reported on and has led to many organizations and individuals to donate and seek out ways in which they can help.

The Los Angeles Angels announced Thursday that they, along with sports organizations across Los Angeles, were giving $450,000 to the cause.

"The Angels are proud to join the Los Angeles professional sports organizations in donating $450,000 to help those impacted by the Hawaii wildfires. For more info on supporting the Hawaii Fire Relief efforts, visit

Three of the fires are still active in what is described as the nation's deadliest wildfire in 100 years. Multiple schools are closed to the public, including Kamehameha III Elementary, which was destroyed in the fire.

According to MauiNow, donations of non-perishable food, bottled water and hygiene products are being accepted on the island. A centralized hub to donate, volunteer, offer services or look for support can be found at manuinuistrong.info.
