Hopefully, he can produce more in Boston than he did with the Angels.

Zack Weiss, who was recently designated for assignment by the Los Angeles Angels, has been claimed off waivers by the Boston Red Sox. He has been optioned to Triple-A and will begin trying to work his way to the big leagues.

Weiss was mainly used as a depth bullpen arm for the Halos, frequently going back and forth from the minor leagues. He showed some promise while with the club but did have some control issues on the mound, causing the Angels to let him go.

The 31-year-old right-handed pitcher appeared in six games this season with the Angels, posting an ERA of 5.06.

During his time in Triple-A this season, he didn’t fare much better. Weiss held an ERA of 6.03 in 30 games played. He also added in 50 strikeouts over 37.1 innings of work.

Last season, he pitched in 12 games for the Halos and showed much better results. He had an ERA of 3.38 last season, and the team had hoped that his production would remain.

The Red Sox are banking on that level of success to return, and they can retain him for the foreseeable future due to him not reaching one full year of major league service time. It’s a low-risk, possibly high-reward situation for Boston, so they jumped at the opportunity.

Weiss was originally drafted back in 2013 in the sixth round by the Cincinnati Reds. He worked his way up the ladder and will now have to do so once again.

We wish him the best of luck in Boston and hope to see him back on a major league mound soon!
