Angels News: Halos Shockingly Call Up 2023 First-Round Pick
The Los Angeles Angels shocked the baseball world Friday morning, calling up 2023 first-round pick Nolan Schanuel to the Major Leagues. ESPN's Jeff Passan reported the surprising news.
Schanuel, 21, was drafted less than six weeks ago in the first round of the 2023 MLB Draft. He was said to be the most ready-now prospect, which is a big reason the Angels drafted him. However, being called up less than six weeks since being drafted is unprecedented.
Schanuel appeared in 21 minor leagues games this year across Rookie Ball, Single-A and Double-A, slashing .370/.510/.493 with six extra-base hits, 15 runs batted in, 21 walks and just 10 strikeouts.
He's now made a meteoric rise to the big leagues, and will look to provide a jolt to the Halos as they try to make a late-season run into the playoffs.
The Angels have been known to call players up quickly, bringing up 2022 first-round pick Zach Neto and 2022 third-round pick Ben Joyce earlier this season. But Schanuel coming up less than two months after he was drafted is next level stuff.
The Angels clearly feel that he's ready, so we'll see how the 21-year-old fares at the biggest stage.
Congrats to him for making this incredible leap, and let's see if he can help the Halos in their postseason push.
