The Los Angeles Angels season hasn’t gone the way that anyone had hoped. They were looking like a potential player team at one point, but that quickly changed after a few poor weeks of play on the field.

The team put together a short winning streak right before the trade deadline, giving the front office hope of a playoff push. They went out and were aggressive in making some trades to upgrade the team, but even that has backfired on them.

And now their worst fear has been realized with two-way superstar Shohei Ohtani suffering a torn UCL. He was removed early in his start on Wednesday against the Cincinnati Reds, and imaging showed that he was dealing with more than just arm fatigue. Ohtani skipped his previous start due to his arm being tired, but nobody could have guessed that it would lead to this.

Ohtani won’t pitch the rest of the season, and it remains to be seen if he will continue to hit as well. The last time he suffered a UCL tear, he had to get Tommy John Surgery. Everyone is hoping that it doesn’t lead to surgery this time around as the entire baseball world holds its breath.

General Manager Perry Minasian does believe that Ohtani will pitch again in his career, speaking about his superstar in a positive light.

“I believe he’ll be back,” said Minasian, who didn’t know the grade of Ohtani’s ligament tear. “And he’ll be able to do both again, at a very high level.”

Per The OC Register

Ohtani will be a free agent at the end of the season, so it’s unknown at this time how this injury will affect things for him. Teams will still show massive interest in his services, but the injury could cost him some of the record-breaking amounts of money that he was scheduled to receive.

“It’s unfortunate, but it happens. If I was to bet on anybody bouncing back, he’d be the guy.”

Per The OC Register

Ohtani has transformed the baseball world with his two-way abilities. He is the modern-day Babe Ruth and is easily the biggest show in the game today. This is a massive blow to both the Angels and the sport.

The hope is that he can come back sooner rather than later from this injury and return to his dominant form. But these types of injuries can be tricky, so it would make sense to shut him down for the remainder of the season. However, knowing Ohtani, he will try to push through, so the Angels may need to save him from himself.
