Angels News: Reid Detmers Talks About His New Favorite Pitch
Reid Detmers, along with the rest of the 2023 Angels besides Shohei Ohtani, has had a down 2023.
The 24-year-old pitcher has a 4.64 ERA almost a whole run higher than his 2022 total.
However, as of late, Detmers has seemed to turn a corner owning a 2.65 ERA over his last six starts.
What has changed with Detmers is his continued increased usage of a changeup.
"Detmers continued the increased changeup use he started a couple of weeks ago. He threw the pitch 23% of the time, his second-highest percentage of the season. Three of his seven strikeouts were on changeups."

Detmers' increased changeup usage has also upped his strikeout numbers striking out seven batters in both of his last two starts.
The young pitcher is quickly finding comfort with the pitch and it is now a backbone to his pitch sequences.
“It’s become one of my favorite pitches,” Detmers said. “Gets me back in the counts. Gets me out of some jams. I feel like I can throw it pretty much whenever I want and that’s a good feeling to have.”

Confidence is a huge part of the development of a pitcher and at just 24 years old Detmers will look to take this change up into the offseason and perfect it before debuting it in 2024.
If Detmers is able to build off this recent addition he may be able to take the no. 1 or 2 role in the starting rotation for the Halos and step in for the missing Shohei Ohtani even if he signs with the team this offseason.
