Angels general manager Perry Minasian spoke to the media last week for the first time in a while. Much of the conversation was regarding Shohei Ohtani and his impending free agency. However, there is still other Angels news to cover — you know, news that actually affects the team right now.

Last month, the Angels avoided arbitration with all but three playersLuis Rengifo, Gio Urshela and Hunter Renfroe. Last week, Minasian provided an update on how those cases are going. This update is courtesy of Sam Blum of The Athletic.

"Minasian said the Angels expect to go to arbitration hearings with Luis Rengifo, Gio Urshela and Hunter Renfroe, unless they can reach multiyear deals with those players. The Angels have reportedly already had their hearing with Renfroe."

The biggest thing that stands out to me from this quote is that they're hoping to reach multiyear deals with the players. When the Angels traded for Urshela and Renfroe this offseason, I thought the plan was to get guys on expiring contracts. However, clearly, the Angels had bigger plans for them, and want to keep them in Anaheim for the foreseeable future.

Blum reported that they already went to arbitration with Renfroe, so we should have some sort of decision on his status soon. As for Rengifo and Urshela, we'll have to wait and see how the arbitration hearings go.
