Angels News: Writer Thinks Phil Nevin's Job Is On The Line As The Second Half Of The Season Continues
With star level talent comes expectations, and when those expectations aren’t met, something needs to change. This has been the narrative surrounding the Los Angeles Angels for quite some time and it continues to this day. Despite having two of the best players in baseball, the Angels have continuously underperformed and haven’t reached the postseason since 2014.
The struggles of the Angels have carried over into this season and it has been hard to watch at times. But it hasn’t all been bad because just a few short weeks ago, the Angels looked like a potential playoff team. However, fast forward a few weeks and their playoff chances look bleak once again.
"They waited a month longer to begin this year's collapse, but there's quite a bit of déjà vu as the Halos fumble away what may well be their final season with Shohei Ohtani."
Per Bleacher Report
They are the prime example of how a few bad weeks of play can completely change the trajectory of a season, and unless Los Angeles can turn things around, changes will likely be made — and that normally starts at the top with the manager.
Kerry Miller of Bleacher Report believes that Angels manager Phil Nevin is on the hot seat as the second half of the season continues on. Nevin inherited a talented roster and while things aren’t all his fault, he will be the one to be blamed for the issues.
"Now, the Ohtani trade speculations have returned with a vengeance, and Nevin is perched perilously on the hot seat for a franchise rapidly approaching a foundational crossroads. Hard to blame the manager for a rampant injury bug that decimated what previously was one of the better offenses in the majors."
Per Bleacher Report
Lost in a lot of this is that Nevin took over last season as the interim manager when Joe Maddon was fired. He was given an opportunity on a one-year deal this past offseason, so I doubt the Angels front office will have an issue moving on him from if they continue to struggle.
It's put up or shut up time for the Angels as they look to try and right the ship. If they can't, there will be major ramifications and likely not just Nevin will be gone from the organization.
