Angels Reportedly Focused on Upgrading 3 Positions This Offseason
While the Los Angeles Angels have been one of the quieter teams this offseason, it appears they are still on the hunt for free agents this offseason.
According to Robert Murray on the Baseball Insiders Podcast, the Angels have been active over the last week and are still looking to build up their outfield, starting pitching and bullpen.
Throughout the offseason, the Angels have signed a few lower-tier pitchers. However, they've been linked to the likes of outfielder Cody Bellinger and starting pitchers Blake Snell and Marcus Stroman.
As of now, the Angels' outfield is in decent shape as they feature three-time MVP Mike Trout along with Mickey Moniak, Taylor Ward, and Jo Adell. However, it could make sense to add another option as Adell hasn't yet proven to be an everyday player at the Major League level.
The Angels were recently runners-up in the Teoscar Hernandez sweepstakes. Unfortunately, being runner-up has been a common trend for them this offseason.
As for starting pitching, the Angels could go back to a five-man rotation as Shohei Ohtani is now with the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Right now, the Angels' starting rotation features Patrick Sandoval, Tyler Anderson, Griffin Canning, Reid Detmers and Zach Pleasac.
While they could go out and turn one of their other young pitchers like Sam Bachman or Chase Silseth into a full-time starter, nobody on this staff is a true ace.
Another route they could go to acquire quality starting pitching is through a trade. Unfortunately for them, they destroyed what little of a farm they had at last year's trade deadline, a move that ended up blowing up in their face when they finished thee season 17-38 and once again missed the playoffs.
If the Angels are hoping to reach the postseason for the first time in 10 years, they will likely need to budge and open the checkbook to try to sign at least Snell or Stroman and another quality veteran pitcher.
