With the Angels searching for a new manager after letting Phil Nevin go this offseason, they are doing so with many factors playing against them. Not only do the Halos have their lack of on-field success working against them, but their biggest selling point in Shohei Ohtani could be walking out the door this winter.

It could be hard to get anyone to take over this club, especially a veteran manager. They want stability, and the Angels are far from a stable organization at the moment.

“Two-way star Shohei Ohtani is not guaranteed to return in 2024. The Angels have not had a winning season since 2015. The American League West — the Houston Astros’ dynasty, the Texas Rangers’ revival and the Seattle Mariners’ rise — is its own kind of challenge. Perry Minasian is in the final year of his contract as the Angels’ general manager. The organization’s farm system is viewed as weak by most around the industry.”

However, one name that has started to make some waves with the Angels is Buck Showalter. Showalter parted ways with the New York Mets after this season, but he still wants to keep managing going forward.

"The Angels are still interested in Showalter, according to a person familiar with the situation but unauthorized to speak on it."

Per Sarah Valenzuela of The LA Times

If the Angels want to make a splash hire, Showalter would be it. But it may be more of a name-signing at this point rather than what is best for the organization.

The Halos need to have a complete overhaul of the team if they want to get back into contention. But owner Arte Moreno doesn't seem willing to do that, and signing Showalter would be another bad decision in a long line of them.

This offseason will certainly be interesting for the Angels, but they really can't afford to keep making the same mistakes over and over.
