The Angels want to go to the postseason for the first time since 2014, and to accomplish this, the Angels need to add another starting pitcher to be a serious contender.

Wednesday, the Angels acquired Lucas Giotto from the Chicago White Sox, but they still need to improve their starting pitching before Tuesday's deadline.

Since the Angels’ pitching WAR is almost last in the major leagues, it is a miracle for them to be hanging around .500. The Angels have a 4.67 ERA, the fifth worst in the major leagues.

The Angels are 4 games out of the American League Wild Card, and they are third place in the American League, 6 games behind the Texas Rangers, who want starting pitching, too.

To compete in the playoffs, the Angels must have good pitching. Good pitching can silence powerful offenses, particularly when they are under pressure.

The path to the playoffs for the Angels is simple. They need more good players. They also need to get healthy. Having Mike Trout on the IL doesn’t help any team make the playoffs. Acquiring starting pitching is difficult for the Angels since every contender wants to bolster its starting rotation. The Angels don’t have a deep farm system, so many buyers will take the other teams’ offers.

Making the playoffs for the Angels with their poor pitching and injuries is almost impossible. No team can get a new team at the deadline. If the Angels want to keep Shohei Ohtani after this season, they need to prove they are serious about being a contender.
