As the offseason gets going for the Los Angeles Angels, they will be looking for a new manager. After letting Phil Nevin go, the Halos will be looking for their fifth manager since 2018.

It could be a tall task for this club, especially given their on-field results over the last few years. The Angels haven’t made the postseason since 2014, and their future looks a little bleak considering two-way superstar Shohei Ohtani may be leaving the team this offseason.

This organization has seen a lot of turnover over the years, and they could use some sense of familiarity within the clubhouse. And they can do just that by looking in-house for their new manager and providing some sense of continuity.

Sarah Valenzuela of The LA Times is reporting that one of the Halos infield coaches is a candidate for the open position.

“The Angels are interested in (Benji Gil) as a potential manager, according to a person familiar with the situation but unauthorized to speak publicly.”

Per Sarah Valenzuela of The LA Times

Gil doesn’t have experience running a Major League Baseball team, but he does have experience as a manager. He managed the Mexico national team in the 2020 Summer Olympics and again in the 2023 World Baseball Classic.

He has been with the team since 2022, so he knows the system in place. Gil also knows the players in the organization, and he could continue to help build them up.

“The ideal candidate for the Angels would be someone who contributes to improving the culture of the organization, has a strong work ethic and has a rich history in baseball. The job would not be a hard sell for some, but would not be as easily enticing to others, particularly to experienced managers, according to one former American League executive who spoke on condition of anonymity in order to speak freely.”

Per Sarah Valenzuela of The LA Times

With Gil being a new manager if he were to be hired, he would jump at the chance to take over the Angels. It would be his chance to make his mark in the league, and the Angels may be better suited to allow him a chance to grow with this roster, rather than trying to make a splashy hire for the sake of doing so.
