Would Ohtani look good in pinstripes?

When you think of star power in baseball, you tend to think of the New York Yankees. As the most historic franchise in the sport’s history, they normally are on the hunt to add stars to their roster. But in recent seasons, the Yankees have taken a step back from their approach and started to build from inward.

However, the biggest show in the game may be available here soon, and the Yankees almost certainly will be making a call. The team has a major interest in getting Angels two-way star Shohei Ohtani into pinstripes and pairing him alongside star outfielder Aaron Judge.

This would be the Yankee way to do things by going out and getting the biggest star in the game today. However, it remains to be seen if they have what it takes to land him in a deal. The Angels are going to ask for a king’s ransom to trade their superstar, and the Yankees may be hesitant to unload everything for a possible rental.

“The X-factor would be if Ohtani's stance of preferring not to play on the East Coast (a reason he wasn't a Yankee in the first place) has shifted, and they believe a trade would help their chances of inking a new contract.”

Per MLB.com

MLB.com put together a few different trade packages for opposing squads to land Ohtani, and the Yankees one leaves something to be desired.

Yankees get:

Shohei Ohtani,

Angels get:

OF Jasson Dominguez (Yankees No. 1 prospect, No. 41 overall), INF Oswald Peraza, RHP Clarke Schmidt, SS Trey Sweeney (Yankees No. 5 prospect)”

Per MLB.com

This trade package seems weak compared to what the Angels could realistically get. Dominguez is a nice player, but the Angels would want more, and I’m not sure the Yankees would be willing.

However, Ohtani is a different breed than any other player so maybe they budge and send the farm.

“It was only a few weeks ago, after all, when managing general partner Hal Steinbrenner said that a Yankees lineup needs to have stars. There’s none brighter than Ohtani, who’d immediately turn every home game into an event”

Per MLB.com

The Yankees could also just wait until the winter to try and sign Ohtani as well. He will be a free agent, so rather than unloading prospects, they could just outright sign him.
