Angels Shohei Ohtani Doesn't Speak to Media Following MVP Award Due to 'Circumstances Out of His Control'
Former Angel and current free agent superstar Shohei Ohtani won the American League Most Valuable Player award in unanimous fashion on Thursday, and celebrated with his dog on national television.
After winning the award, Ohtani was set to speak to reporters for the first time since Aug. 9.
The MLB had his conference call set up, but after a 30-minute delay, announced that he would not be speaking. MLB officials said it was due to circumstances that were out of his control.
Obviously it's very possible that Ohtani had some technical difficulties that were unable to be dealt with, but at the same time, it's a little weird that the MLB Network was able to perfectly have him on their show for 30 minutes and then the MLB couldn't figure out how to get a conference call to work.
Ohtani has been very adamant about keeping his entire free agent process a mystery, and with free agency underway, it's very likely a lot of the questions would have been about that process.
But instead, Ohtani had some technical difficulties, and is off the hook from speaking to reporters with free agency in full swing.
Ohtani isn't one for interviews, so this is likely the last time we see and hear from him before his free agency decision is made.
It's impossible to blame him for not wanting to speak to reporters at this time, and this very well may have been an accident. But the timing of it all definitely adds a lot more mystery to the Ohtani saga.
