Stop me if you've heard this before: The Los Angeles Angels have made a surprise call-up.

On Wednesday, the team selected the contract of RHP Kelvin Caceres, a player who began the 2023 season in High-A. To make room for him on the active and 40-man rosters, RHP Jose Marte was optioned to Triple-A Salt Lake and LHP Aaron Loup was placed on the 60-day injured list.

Caceres played in High-A, Double-A and Triple-A this year for the Halos organization. In High-A, he appeared in 11 games, sporting an impressive 2.45 ERA.

Then, he struggled in Double-A, holding a 5.61 ERA in 34 appearances.

The team decided to raise him to Triple-A, though, and he was lights out, sporting a 0.90 ERA in 10 innings (nine appearances).

With just a few games to go, the team decided to call him up to the big leagues. If he appears in a game, he'll be the 66th player to play for the Halos this season, which ties the franchise record set last year.

As for Loup, we knew his season was over. His locker is already cleared out and he's heading into an offseason of uncertainty.
