Angels Update: New Injury Updates Means LA Possibly has 6th Starting Pitcher
Your Los Angeles Angels are off to a good start to begin their 2023 campaign. They're currently tied with the Texas Rangers for first place in the AL West, and things are in line for the Halos rotation-wise.
They currently have a five-man rotation of Shohei Ohtani, Tyler Anderson, Patrick Sandoval, Jose Suarez, and Reid Detmers. According to Angels' insider Sam Blum, the Halos could be adding in a sixth man after their weekend series against the Toronto BlueJays.
This would be a massive plus for the Halos with an already solid rotation. Griffin Canning last pitched in 2021 in the majors, and that would be the last time he would after being diagnosed with a stress fracture in his back. He missed the next 20 months and then went into the 15-day IL before the start of the 2023 season with a groin injury. Now the 26-year-old could look at his first start in about two years next week.
The Halos will take on the Washington Nationals after their series against the BlueJays, and we could see a Canning appearance. Canning has spent three years in the majors, all with the Halos, and has a 12-13 record with a 4.73 ERA, 214 strikeouts in 43 games, and 209.1 innings pitched.
Regardless of the numbers, fans are excited to see the righty back on the hill. His latest rehab outing excited fans, and they hope this is a sign of things to come with him on the mound.
He would provide a massive spark for the Halos and be a solid sixth man behind superstar Shohei Ohtani and the fellow veterans in the rotation.
