The Angels will give the ball to Griffin Canning against the Arizona Diamondbacks on Saturday. The team is also hoping for Jose Soriano to pitch in hopes of converting the 25-year-old reliever into a starter.

Manager Ron Washington told reporters that Soriano, a starting pitcher in the minors prior to a 2020 elbow injury, has the stuff to make the conversion. Last year he threw four pitches: a curveball, a sinker, a four-seamer and a slider. Some starting pitchers are able to have success with three, so you don't have to squint to see the Angels' logic here.

Washington said Soriano will have a chance to throw three innings.

Canning will face off against left-hander Logan Allen, who's making his second Cactus League start in his own bid to make the Diamondbacks' rotation.
