A common theme for the Los Angeles Angels this season has been the bullpen not being able to hold onto leads that the starting pitcher and/or offense leaves them. It's been a recipe for disaster and, outside of Andrew Wantz, they have not had a whole lot of consistent relievers in 2023.

However, the clock is now ticking for a member of the starting rotation in Jose Suarez. LA's embarrassing loss to a struggling Oakland Athletic's team was capitalized by the LHP giving up five runs in the first two inning and five homers overall. It was rumored that he was tipping pitches at first and that's what led to a horrible outing but nonetheless, his pitching led a 10-11 loss in extra innings for the Halos.

How Does This Performance Fall in Line With Others This Season?

It hurts to say this but last night's disappointing showcase for Suarez is nothing new for him this year. It was his fourth start for the Halos in 2023 and arguably his worst as he had to stay for five innings due to lack of depth and finally had a game counted towards his name.

But the stats are not looking too hot and the Angels' coaching staff and front office have a lot to ponder. He has yet to pitch under a 9.00 ERA when taking the mound thus far and has only struck out at least five hitters just once.

What Are Phil Nevin's Thoughts?

Nevin obviously has a ton on his plate in his first season as the team manager but something has to be here with Suarez. It is becoming a glaring issue whenever he steps up to the mound and Nevin of all people is well-aware that the Halos cannot be dropping games this season.

When asked about Suarez's future as a starter, Nevin kept it very simple yet clear.

"It's a conversation we're going to have to have, to be quite honest," said Nevin.

The Angels now fall to 11-12 but will get another shot at Oakland Tuesday at 6:38 pm PT.
