MLB Writer Thinks Angels Reliever Could Make First All-Star Appearance This Season
The Los Angeles Angels have certainly gotten off to an impressive start to the 2023 season. Despite a string of injuries to impactful players, they have managed to stay afloat and remain within striking distance of the wild card race and in their division. One key factor in their success has been the exceptional performance of their closer, Carlos Estévez. Estévez has undoubtedly been a standout player, as he's on the trajectory to having the best season of his career.
Throughout the 2023 campaign, Estevez has been nothing short of phenomenal. Due to his outstanding play, there is a real shot at the righty flame thrower to make his first All-Star game. MLB expert for Bleacher Report Joel Reuter listed 15 players who could make their first All-Star game, and even though he put Estévez in the honorable mentions, we believe he could and should make it.
When Estévez takes the mound, it's as if a switch flips, and he becomes virtually untouchable, and the numbers show it. In 22 games, he's 1-1 with a 1.23 ERA, 29 strikeouts, 1.14 WHIP, and is a perfect 12-for-12 in save opportunities in 22 innings. This is his first season in Orange County, and his numbers from the past don't come close. He spent his first six seasons as a Colorado Rockie, and he's never had a sub-three ERA in his time there.
When the game is on the line, and the pressure is at its highest, Estévez thrives. As the 2023 season progresses, all eyes will be on the 30-year-old when he comes in for a save. His remarkable performances have put him in contention for a well-deserved All-Star nod, and at the moment, he deserves it.
