The Houston Astros defeated the San Francisco Giants 7-3 in the series opener.

Then the Astros fell flat one day later.

Houston (16-14) managed only three hits and were shut out, 2-0, on Tuesday. It was the first time this season that the Astros were unable to score at least one run.

Yainer Diaz doubled in the third inning and Yordan Alvarez hit a double in the seventh. In between, the Astros had 11 straight batters retired.

Diaz had two of the Astros’ three hits and threw out two runners attempting to steal.

Diaz has gone 8-for-23 (.348) since starting the season 0-for-8.

The retractable roof at Minute Maid Park was open for the first time this season.

Houston starter Hunter Brown gave up four hits, two runs and walked a career-worst five with four strikeouts in 4 1/3 innings. Brown had tossed seven innings without allowing an earned run in three of his previous four starts.

The fourth inning hurt Brown on Tuesday when he threw 31 pitches and walked three batters.

The Astros will turn to Framber Valdez in the series finale Wednesday and he’ll be opposed by Logan Webb.
