Astros' GM Says They're Going to Offer Alex Bregman an Extension
When the offseason began for the Houston Astros this year, they were in a different place than they were after 2022.
This time, they were coming off being eliminated by their rival Texas Rangers after holding a lead in the American League Championship Series, instead of planning a championship parade.
Instead of figuring out how to maintain their stronghold over the AL and rest of the league, they had to look for moves that would help them get back to the World Series.
That almost didn't happen, though.
Astros' owner Jim Crane originally wanted to stay under the luxury cap threshold, giving general manager Dana Brown very little flexibility to operate in free agency.
However, Crane eventually decided he no longer wanted to operate that way and blew threw the threshold when signing Josh Hader to a megadeal.
After that happened, all caution has been cast aside in Houston.
Jose Altuve was the next one to get paid when he signed a lucrative extension that should keep him with the franchise until he retires.
But, while everyone was celebrating that aspect, there was some speculation this move signaled Alex Bregman's tenure with the Astros could be over when he hits free agency after the season.
To keep this championship roster in tact, Crane will have to spend money.
Houston fans got some great news when the owner said their championship window will always be open as long as he's owning the team, indicating he might be willing to spend the money necessary for Bregman.
Now, Brown is saying that the Astros are going to offer an extension to their star third baseman.
"At some point, we will make an offer ... Look, we love Alex, we'd love to have him here. As far as a timeline, we just don't have it, but we will at some point make him an offer," he said according to Brian McTaggart of MLB.com.
Bregman has been an important part of Houston since being selected second overall by them in 2015.
He's a two-time World Series champion and is one of the faces of their franchise.
Whether something is able to get completed will be seen, but it's a good sign that both parties are thinking about working something out to keep him with the Astros for years to come.
