Baseball Legend Gives Astros Advice For Home Struggles
It was a weird regular season for the Houston Astros regarding their home and away splits.
They dominated in their own park during 2022, finishing with a record of 55-26 in the regular season and 61-27 with the playoffs included.
That has not been the case this year.
The Astros finished the 2023 regular season under .500 with a record of 39-42.
Conversely, they were 51-30 on the road, holding the third-best record when in opposing ballparks.
The fall off from last year to this year is alarming.
No team in Major League history has ever made the World Series with a below .500 record at home.
Houston was looking to buck that trend because of their playoff pedigree, but through four games in Minute Maid Stadium, they have a 1-3 record this postseason.
This was a major topic of conversation on Fox Sports 1's pregame show, with baseball legend Derek Jeter perplexed by what is taking place.
"I don't have an answer, it's inexplicable ... You can't say they don't see the ball. You look at the run differential, everybody else sees the ball here, so I don't know how to explain it. But they need to turn it around, and they need to turn it around quickly, or they're in trouble," he said.
Facing a 2-0 deficit in the ALCS, they're certainly in trouble.
They'll need to rely on their road prowess to even get the series back to their home stadium.
But if they are able to accomplish that, they might not be able to capitalize based on their struggles.
So, what advice does Jeter have for them to turn things around at home?
"I'd take them all to a hotel and pretend we're on the road," he sort of said tongue in cheek.
At this point, that doesn't seem like the worst idea.
Something clearly needs to change for the Astros when they're at home.
First, they'll have to continuing playing well on the road as they have three games in the Texas Rangers' park where they have to win at least two starting on Wednesday.
