Could Houston Astros Pull Off Game-Changing Trade with Guardians This Winter?
The winds are changing for the Houston Astros after losing Game 7 of the American League Championship Series to the Texas Rangers. Following the bounce from the postseason, manager Dusty Baker decided to hang up the cleats.
It has prompted many questions about where this franchise, a team that has turned into a dynasty, goes from here.
In essence, the Astros were just one solid starting pitcher away from returning to the World Series. For most of the season, Houston has had to rely on J.P. France, Hunter Brown and of course, Jose Urquidy down the stretch.
None of those were legitimate options to pitch in the biggest moments on the largest stage. Yet...
Enter Shane Bieber.
The 28-year-old is in his final year of arbitration and signed a $10.1 million deal last year to avoid the process. He figures to bring in a similar number.
He is a starter that flashes ace-like stuff, is in his prime and could be had for a lot less than a pitcher with a lot more team control. He also has plenty of postseason experience.
Add in the fact he fits in with Houston's timeline and the fit is a no-brainer.
The question is return compensation.
Jake Myers, Chas McCormick, Mauricio Dubon and J.P. France are all names that come to mind in terms of Major League talent that could be moved. Houston's farm system isn't robust, but adding one of the above Big League guys could get the deal across the finish line.
The Astros need a competent third starter. Yes, Lance McCullers Jr. is supposed to be back next season, but he was also slated to pitch this year. That didn't happen. Luis Garcia may be able to pitch some in the second half of the season, but nothing is guaranteed after undergoing Tommy John surgery.
If Houston intends to keep pace with the Rangers in the American League West and ultimately return to the World Series, another bonafide starter like Bieber would be the best place to start.
