Yuli Gurriel Could Be Close to Deal With New MLB Team
The Yuli Gurriel era in Houston may be coming to an end very soon as reports indicate that the free agent is talking with other teams.
Ken Rosenthal of the Athletic reported Tuesday that the Miami Marlins were talking with Gurriel on the possibility of a minor league deal
Last season with the Houston Astros, Gurriel experienced stark regression, slashing .242/.288/.360 with eight home runs and 55 RBI. However, during the Astros World Series run, he slashed .347 with two home runs and four RBI before he was injured in Game 5 of the World Series.
When asked about Gurriel earlier this year in a radio interview with Sports Talk 790, new Astros General Manager Dana Brown alluded to his plans with the first baseman.
"The realistic thing is we have Abreu at first base right now. So at the end of the day, we have to look at maybe some other spots ... to strengthen the club, give [Astros manager] Dusty [Baker] more options, "But we're all about getting stronger."
If this indeed the end of the Gurriel era in Houston, Astros fans can take solace in the fact that Gurriel helped create the magic during the Houston Astros 2017 and 2022 World Series championship runs. Gurriel has been a reliable bat for the Houston Astros when they needed someone to step up in the clutch and he certainly delivered on several occasions.
If he does sign with Miami, it could signal a fresh start for Gurriel and maybe he will regain some of the numbers he had with Houston.
