Report: Houston Astros' Scrubb Throws First Bullpen of the Year
Once tossing the most innings for the Houston Astros bullpen in a single season, Andre Scrubb's name has since drifted away. The reliever was designated for assignment and sent outright to Triple-A Sugar Land last November and hasn't pitched since.
A shoulder injury held Scrubb out most of the 2021 season after entering the year one of the main late-inning arms for the Astros. Starting a rehab assignment in August, Scrubb never returned to the active roster nor joined the taxi squad for the postseason.
But on Sunday, Scrubb reportedly threw his first bullpen of the year, per Michael Schwab of The Juice Box Journal.
"It felt good to be back out there and have little to no discomfort," Scrubb told Schwab.
Scrubb won't be a contributor to the Astros this season and unlikely next year, but a minor league rehab assignment could be in the right-hander's future. While not facing live action since Oct. 1 of last year, the 27-year-old hopes to finish out the season with the Space Cowboys.
This year marks a sixth season in the minor leagues for Scrubb which may open a door to free agency and another shot with a Major League club. The Astros currently don't have a 40-man roster spot open nor an opportunity for Scrubb to contribute in the near future.
