Houston Astros Announce Signing of Relief Pitcher to Minor League Deal
The Houston Astros have officially announced the signing of right-handed relief pitcher Ty Buttrey to a minor league deal with an invitation to Major League Spring Training. That now brings the Astros Spring Training roster to 61.
Buttrey has three seasons worth of MLB experience, all of which he spent with the Los Angeles Angels. From 2018 to 2020, Buttrey pitched 115.0 innings in 115 appearances. He holds a career 4.30 ERA with a 1.296 WHIP.
In 2021, Buttrey stepped away from the game of baseball citing "diminished love and passion" for the game. However, that only lasted one season.
During the 2022 season, Buttrey spent his entire season with Triple-A Salt Lake and accumulated a 5.94 ERA over 36.1 innings pitched, a rough re-introduction to the game.
Houston is taking a flier on Buttrey likely in hopes that he can return to the form that helped the Angels, especially during his 2019 season when he threw 72.1 innings. He could also be used at depth at Triple-A Sugar Land.
