Houston Astros Farm System Report: April 10
With another week of minor league baseball in the books, it’s time to take a closer look at how the top-30 Houston Astros prospects in Triple-A Sugar Land are fairing to start the 2023 season.
Houston currently has seven players on the Space Cowboys squad fighting for a shot at making their Major League debut this year. Three of Houston's prospects are already currently on the Astros roster — including pitcher Hunter Brown (No. 1), catcher Yainer Diaz (No. 2) and outfielder Corey Julks (No. 30).
Leading off the prospect list in Sugar Land is catcher and designated hitter Korey Lee (No. 7), who is batting .346 through 26 at-bats with one home run and four RBI.
Outfielder Pedro Leon (No. 8) has also started the season hot at the plate — batting .323 through 31 at-bats with one stolen base.
Outfielder Justin Dirden (No. 9), meanwhile, is batting .267 through 30 at-bats with one RBI.
Pitcher Misael Tamarez (No. 13) saw his first action with the Space Cowboys this past week, tossing three innings with a 9.00 ERA and four strikeouts.
Infielder Joe Perez (No. 16) has struggled to start the season in Sugar Land, batting .160 through 25 at-bats with one home run and six RBI.
Pitcher Forrest Whitley (No. 21) also played for the first this past week, garnering a win while posting a 2.25 ERA over four innings pitched (73 pitches) with four strikeouts.
Shawn Dubin (No. 25), a right-handed pitcher for the Space Cowboys, who has appeared in two games with a 2.25 ERA over eight innings pitched with 10 strikeouts, rounds out the top-30 Astros prospect in Sugar Land.
The Space Cowboys (3-5) return to action on Tuesday, April 11, as Sugar Land faces Oklahoma City (7-2) on the road at 6:05 p.m. CT, once again giving Houston’s prospects a chance to shine as the season rolls on.
