Former Houston Astros Prospect Retires in Surprising Fashion
Former Houston Astros prospect Jayson Schroeder has retired from professional baseball at the age of 23 according to Chandler Rome of the Houston Chronicle.
Schroeder was drafted by the Astros in the second round of the 2018 MLB Draft as a high school talent but he never made it past Class A ball. He announced his retirement via social media.
Looking back on my career, I am overwhelmed by a multitude of thoughts, emotions and experiences that cannot be adequately expressed here,” Schroeder wrote in an Instagram post announcing his retirement. “I am profoundly grateful for the invaluable lessons I have learned and the opportunities that God continues to place in my life.”
He finishes his career with a 6.95 ERA with 189 walks and last year, he walked 61 batters and hit seven batters in 27 1/3 innings with Class A Fayetteville . In a interview last year with the Chronicle, Schroeder stated that the hype must have gotten to him being drafted so early on.
“[I] probably definitely let that get to me more than I probably would have wanted to, looking back on it.”
The next pick the Astros made would be Jeremy Peña who would later become the Astros future shortstop star and helped propel the Houston Astros to the 2022 World Series title.
