Houston Astros Altuve Has Broken Thumb, Will Miss Significant Time
Houston Astros second baseman Jose Altuve broke his right thumb after being hit by a pitch from Team USA's Daniel Bard on Saturday night while competing for Venezuela in the World Baseball Classic.
USA Today's Bob Nightengale reports that Altuve will miss 8-10 weeks while he recovers from his injury. It's a huge blow to the Astros as they look to push for a consecutive World Series championship during the 2023 MLB season.
Altuve's injury happened during World Baseball Classic competition which is once again raising questions about the tournament's purpose and validity. New York Mets closer Edwin Diaz suffered a knee injury just days ago which sparked the argument against the WBC.
However, Diaz injured himself celebrating, why Altuve was hit by a pitch.
It's unfortunate for Altuve and Houston, but they have plenty of depth to help mitigate the temporary loss.
