Houston Astros Lose Key Reliever for Entire 2024 Season
The Houston Astros announced on Tuesday that right-handed reliever Kendall Graveman underwent surgery on his right shoulder. He's now expected to miss the remainder of the 2024 season, per the Astros social media release.
Losing Graveman hurts for more than one reason.
Not only is he an above-average reliever who can get outs at a high level, but Houston's bullpen doesn't have much depth as it is. This will be a massive loss for an already depleted bullpen.
Hector Neris, Phil Maton, and Ryne Stanek, who all played big roles in the bullpen, departed in free agency and there hasn't been much chatter they are looking for a reunion.
In fact, it was previously mentioned Houston was not looking at Maton, despite him having a career year in 2023.
However, Graveman's injury could lead to a potential reunion with any of the three veteran relievers given the situation the Astros find themselves in.
He posted a 2.42 ERA in 23 appearances for Houston in 2023. The right-hander gave up just six earned runs in 22 1/3 innings pitched. He started the season with the Chicago White Sox before being traded to the Astros.
While Houston historically hasn't spent much on free agents, this gives them a chance to finally do so. With Josh Hader on the market, he becomes someone the team desperately needs. Hader's arguably the best reliever in baseball and will be a big piece on a contending team.
If they don't decide to sign or trade for bullpen arms, prospects will have to fill these roles.
GM Dana Brown said that the team is looking for relievers to bring in, according to Brian McTaggart. He believes that they have internal options but have also been in the mix for relievers on the market.
