The Houston Astros and two of their star players are further apart in contract extensions than previously believed as money seems to be the issue.

The Houston Astros have been very public in their pursuit of extending right fielder Kyle Tucker and ace Framber Valdez. Getting deals done early has been the trademark of General Manager Dana Brown throughout his career, especially when he was with the Atlanta Braves.

Cristian Javier was the first domino to fall when it comes to extensions in this new regime. And while the Astros may be publicly pursuing Tucker and Valdez, Jon Heyman of the New York Post reports that Brown will only try for two more days.

“These are going to be more difficult to get done at this juncture,” Brown admitted. “It feels like they’re coming to a close. We’ll know within the next 48 hours.

“We’re communicating. It looks like we’re further away with Tucker, but we’ll see.”

Even if extensions don't get done within the next few days, that doesn't preclude them from trying at another juncture. Brown is adamant on reducing distraction as they head into the 2023 MLB season.

Heyman did note that Tucker is looking for a long term deal, presumably longer than what Valdez is after. That could be the sticking point.
