There is very little that the Houston Astros need to do this offseason to push them into contender status. As long as their core group of players are on the roster, then they will be viewed as World Series contenders.

Eight of their nine position players will be back. All five starters and their closer will also return heading into next season.

There will be some minor tweaks that general manager Dana Brown makes as they need more bullpen pieces after losing three to free agency.

One thing that the Astros could also do is lockup their superstar to a lifetime contract.

According to Bob Nightengale of USA TODAY, despite agent of Jose Altuve, Scott Boras, saying that Houston hasn't reached out regarding extensions, there are still plans in place to make sure he retires an Astro.

"A high-ranking Astros executive said their intention is to keep Altuve for the duration of his career," he reports.

It makes sense.

Altuve is one of the best players in their franchise's history and has spent all 13 seasons in Houston.

The 33-year-old showed that he still has something left in the tank during the playoffs after an injury plagued year saw him play the fewest games of his career during a 162-season since his rookie year.

Getting locked into virtual lifetime contracts are always a tricky proposition to navigate for organizations.

The team wouldn't offer a player that type of deal if they hadn't performed in the past and became beloved by the fanbase. Still, if the production drops off, it's hard to replace them based on contract and fan sentiment.

Altuve continues to perform at a high-level for the Astros and has earned this type of contract.

Whether he actually gets offered it or not is to be seen.
